The right to request

Access can require a change in a space, rule or service.

The New York State notice explains that a person with a physical, mental or medical impairment may ask a housing provider for a reasonable accommodation or modification needed for equal use and enjoyment of housing.

Requests can involve a unit, common area, policy, practice or service. The official notice explains the requirements, examples and complaint process in full.

Examples in the notice

Requests are specific to the person and the housing.

  • A reasonable means of entering or leaving a building for a person with a mobility impairment.
  • An assistance animal when supported by appropriate disability-related documentation, despite a no-pet rule.
  • Permission to install bathroom grab bars; responsibility for cost depends on the circumstances described in the notice.
  • A parking accommodation related to an impairment.
  • Notices in an accessible format, including large print or electronic delivery.
  • Accessible public areas, doors, routes, controls, bathrooms and kitchens in covered buildings.
